Machiya are a traditional Japanese residential architectural style that can also be renovated to incorporate fine modern architectural interiors.
Whether old or newly renovated, Machiya exist in harmony with nature. Today, however, the number of Machiya in Kyoto continues to decrease.
Manhattan, the epitome of a modern urban city with a history of historic preservation, is an ideal location from which to address the preservation of machiya from a global perspective.
During the public symposium, we will discuss the current situation in Kyoto and share our experience with machiya revitalization with an international audience.
We would also like to learn about historic preservation and revitalization in the U.S. Based on the experience of our American counterparts, we would like to engage in a discussion of best practices and fundraising.
We are eager to spread the word about the "The Machiya Machizukuri Fund" and build empathy and support among the speakers and audience.
